Standing guard over a gap in the Purbeck Hills, Corfe Castle, which is Norman in origin although the present structure dates from the 15th century, is one of the most impressive ruins in southern England. It was on this site that King Edward the Martyr was murdered in AD 978 and the castle remained intact until it eventually fell to Cromwell’s troops.
