Life in 19th Century Dorset Workhouses

‘Kill me sooner than take me there’ says a Dickensian character of the workhouse. But was the workhouse, or Union, really somewhere to fear or a place of safety for those without anything? Luke Moulham, an expert in his field of research, will tell us why they were set up, for whom, and what those needing shelter could expect from the charity. There are some extraordinary stories of the builders, organisers and the users – the old, orphaned, families, the destitute, the ‘deserving poor’ and the idle..

This event is promoted by Purbeck Association of the National Trust to raise funds for The National Trust – registered charity No 205846
