Line-up
Dele Sosimi band
Laura Jurd Quartet
Dominie Hooper
Alkanna Graeca
The named artists on the bill are primarily the ones jamming in the round, rather than it being an ‘open-mic’ event, although the intimate atmosphere, the circular layout and the communal excitement mean that the audience are vital contributing force to the performances.
Dele Sosimi, the Nigerian-British Afrobeat Ambassador, Musician and Educator, has been at the heart of the global Afrobeat scene since relocating to the UK in December 1995. Having started his musical career with Fela Kuti’s Egypt 80 band in his teens, over forty years later, he remains a tireless ambassador for the unique musical movement all over the world. His blend of complex funk grooves, traditional Nigerian music, African percussion and an underlying sense of jazz combines with his virtuoso keyboard skills and rhythmic singing to make him one of the most respected Afrobeat authorities of his era.
One of the most distinctive voices in jazz and improvised music today, Laura Jurd’s love of folk traditions can often be heard in her music, alongside a background in classical composition. The result is a melodic world full of compelling twists and turns, whilst retaining a grounded sense of familiarity. This autumn sees Laura returning to the stage, presenting her new album, “Rites & Revelations” release due October 2025. The music takes the listener on a journey of ritual and catharsis, propelled by the uniquely dynamic rhythm section of Elliot Galvin – keyboards and Corrie Dick – drums, alongside strikingly-brilliant folk violist Cori Smith.
“Jurd seems unconcerned by transient fashions or enrolment in any kind of scene, and pursues a private muse that draws on jazz, folk traditions from Europe and the Middle East… her work is always spiritedly accessible, and often suggests wordless songs” – John Fordham, The Guardian
Dominie Hooper is a London-based singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist crafting spellbinding music rooted in folklore, ritual, and emotional transformation. Her songs simmer with raw intensity and lyrical barbs, blending growling cello, textured guitar, and collective vocals into something dark, unsettling, and beautiful. The multi-instrumentalist originates from Dartmoor, her voice is strikingly powerful, her songwriting rugged and dramatic, all propelled by her cello and a blistering live band.
“Endlessly engaging and thrilling” – Guy Garvey, BBC 6Music “Absolutely beautiful” – Shaun Keaveny
“Spine-tingling” – Roddy Hart, BBC Radio Scotland
Alkanna Graeca is a polyphonic vocal trio, breathing new life into centuries-old traditions of the Balkans through free improvisation and fresh arrangements. Formed by Irini Arabatzi, Alexandra Achillea, and Dunja Botic, the trio blends their influences from maqam, jazz, and experimental music to create a sound that is both deeply rooted in their cultural heritage and fearlessly forward-thinking.
Alkanna Graeca’s debut EP will be released this winter, marking the beginning of an exciting journey of sonic exploration and cultural celebration.
