Ashmore Filly Loo 2024
The Ashmore Filly Loo is a traditional folk festival that takes place on or around the summer solstice in the village of Ashmore, Dorset. The origins of the Filly Loo are uncertain, but it is believed to have pagan roots and may have been a fertility ritual in the past. Today, the Filly Loo is a celebration of the summer season and is enjoyed by both locals and visitors to the area.
This years Filly Loo actually takes place on the summer solstice and celebrates the longest day of the year and the filling of the village pond.
The Filly Loo begins with a procession led by the Green Man, a mythical figure representing nature and fertility. The procession is followed by Morris dancers, a band, and other performers. There is also a variety of stalls selling food, drink, and crafts.
In the evening, the Abbots Bromley Horn Dance is performed. This ancient dance is thought to be a fertility rite and features men dressed as deer with antlers on their heads. The dance is accompanied by music and singing.
The Filly Loo is a fun and festive event celebrating the summer solstice and the natural world. It is a great opportunity to come together with the community and enjoy a day of dancing, music, and food.
