Wordmakers Summer Bash ft Toby Thompson and Dizraeli and Dead Horse Bay

Details

The Wordmakers Team is having a Summer Bash and we’ve invited our favourite wordsmiths and troubadours: Toby Thompson, Dead Horse Bay and Dizraeli.

Doors open at 7pm till late – Running Order tbc

We hope you’re excited 🙂

DizraelI is on tour with Animal Noises, an acapella stripped back performance.

“Incredible” – Gilles Peterson

“A vital poetic voice in UK rap” – Line of Best Fit

2020 Album of the Year nominee – Worldwide Music Awards

Rapper, producer, firestarter. Songwriter, multi instrumentalist-raconteur… Dizraeli is a genre of his own. From his debut solo album Engurland (City Shanties) to touring the world and releasing the acclaimed Moving In The Dark with The Small Gods, on the way collaborating with artists as diverse as Nubiyan Twist, Kae Tempest, Jam Baxter and Eliza Carthy… and releasing his solo masterpiece The Unmaster, nominated for Album of the Year by Gilles Peterson in the 2020 Worldwide Awards… Diz has always forged his own way.

2023 sees Dizraeli publish his first book on the Continuous Breath imprint : Animal Noises, a collection of lyrics, diary entries, experimental writings and surreal illustrations drawn from the margins of his notebooks. Animal Noises is a searingly honest exploration of the mess of human creation, and it bursts with life : think Dylan Thomas meeting Black Thought at a John Cage concert, and you’re halfway there.

Here is our secone act: Toby Thompson

Toby was the first poet we ever booked for Word Makers & Silence Breakers 🙂 We are so happy he is coming back 🙂

“Entrancing… The words tumble out of him like an extended jazz solo.”

The Guardian

“One of the most inspired, powerful poets I’ve heard in years.”

Dizraeli. Champion Poet, Rapper, Dizraeli & The Small Gods.

“…easily one of the most gifted young wordsmiths I have ever had the pleasure to encounter.”

Akala. Rapper & founder of the Hip Hop Shakespeare Company

“Toby Thompson is the future.”

Kae Tempest

Toby Thompson is a writer and performer of thoughts and feelings. Not just his own, but somehow yours too. His poetry displays his delight in life’s uncertainties and absurdities and his uniquely rhythmic and musical style is lyrical, beguiling, playful and poignant.

Toby has written commissions for the RSC and for the National Portrait Gallery. He’s a previous Glastonbury Poetry Slam Champion.

His first one man theatre show, ‘A Day To Remember’, was commissioned in 2015 for Remembrance Day by Royal And Derngate, Northampton.

His second show, ‘For The Record’, premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe 2018, where it received a satisfying clutch of 4 & 5 star reviews and won the Pleasance Indie Award for Best Theatre Show.

In January 2020, Toby’s third one-man-poetry-and-music-storytelling-bonanza ‘I Wish I Was A Mountain’ flew to Philidelphia, where it won the prestigious Viktor award for Best Theatre Show at the International Performance Art For Youth Festival. In 2022, Toby toured ‘I Wish I Was A Mountain’ to China for six months, and also to Ireland for 3 weeks, where he received a 5 star review in the Irish Times.

Third act announcement : Dead Horse Bay

Dead Horse Bay is an abandoned beach in New York so littered with broken bottles and bones that as the waves caress its shoreline, a grotesquely unique symphony is heard. Finding that same beauty in the darkest corners of the human mind, Dead Horse Bay plays with the soul and sound of spoken word atop the pulsating heart and rhythm of the double bass weaving together blues, poetry, folk, punk-rock, and hip-hop into something monstrous, surreal and oddly magnificent.
