‘Rewilding’ later prehistory: Archaeological wildlife and its role in contemporary nature recovery | Anwen Cooper

Do answers to out current and future environmental challenges lie in the past? A lecture by archaeologist Dr Anwen Cooper taking place at Dorset Museum & Art Gallery on Thursday 20 June at 7:00pm will seek to demonstrate archaeology’s contemporary relevance to climate change, biodiversity loss and rewilding initiatives.

Dr Cooper leads on the ‘Rewilding’ Later Prehistory project, a collaboration between Oxford Archaeology, the Universities of Oxford, Exeter and York, Centre for Ancient Genomics, Toulouse, Historic England and Knepp Castle Estate. The project focuses on the Bronze and Iron Ages – a key tipping point in the transition from wild to farmed landscapes in Britain. She will present the initial findings of the project and will outline and explore the various pathways reconnecting archaeology with nature recovery practices.

Dr Cooper says:
“By giving wildlife due attention, we hope to build a richer and more vibrant understanding of later prehistory, offering a serious challenge to traditional human-centred landscape histories and a vital link to current nature recovery practices.”
