Iron Age cookery course

Details

Learn about the utensils, ingredients, recipes and techniques used to prepare everyday meals 2000 years ago, during the Iron Age (2nd-1st century BC)!
We will set up in one of the reconstructed roundhouses at the Ancient Technology Centre for the day, discover the basic principles of recreating ancient meals and work together to prepare a communal lunch over the open fire. The ingredients used would have been available in the area, and at this time of the year, during the Iron Age. The cooking utensils are replicas of ancient ones (clay pots, iron knives, wooden bowls and spoons…) or as close as can be (metal cauldron and tripod instead of a chain hanging from the ceiling).

After learning how to maintain and use your fire efficiently and how to use pots instead of pans, you will cook several dishes that will be shared for lunch, make butter by hand (to take home with you or to enjoy straight away), grind grain on a stone querns and prepare sweet and savoury snacks including cheesy flatbreads and/or honey cakes. If time allows it, we can also have a go at making soft cheese that you can flavour with fresh herbs or honey and fruits!

ALLERGIES / DIETS:
Yes, we have vegetarian and even vegan historic dishes! We also try to adapt to food allergies and strong dislikes.
So not to worry, everyone can join our courses, BUT we need to know about ANY FOOD ALLERGIES AND DIETS at least a week before the course otherwise we cannot guarantee that you will be able to eat the food that is prepared… which would be a shame.

COURSE INFORMATION:
£60/person.
– 10 places maximum! Over 18yo only.
– Drinks and snacks will be provided during the day. Lunch is cooked by the participants (feel free to bring your own snacks if you worry, we will not be upset!). Toilets are accessible on site at all times.

POSSIBILITY TO SLEEP IN THE VIKING LONGHOUSE on site on the Saturday night for an extra £20/person!! (You will need your own sleeping/camping equipment ~ sleepover bookings by email only: pario.gallico@gmail.com)
