People will be able to get their first close-up view of Poole’s new Twin Sails Bridge on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 February 2012. The Mayor of Poole’s Community Weekend will give people a chance to walk across the Twin Sails Bridge in a traffic-free environment before its official opening in March. On Saturday 25 February, The Mayor Poole, Cllr Graham Wilson, will lead a civic procession from Poole Museum to the Twin Sails Bridge to watch its iconic lifting leaves being raised at 10.15 am. Once the ‘twin sails’ are lowered at 10.30am, the Mayor will cut a ribbon before leading the first group of invited local guests across the bridge and back again. At approximately 11am, the Mayor will invite local residents to walk across the bridge, giving a fantastic opportunity for everyone to see their new bridge close up. The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Graham Wilson, said: “With Poole Bridge nearing its 85th birthday we wanted to celebrate both the history and future of the town. We are imitating parts of the opening ceremony of Poole Bridge on 9 March 1927 with a civic procession and the cutting of a ribbon. We’re delighted that a number of local residents who took part in the 1927 [...]

Scientists are working on more effective treatments for pancreatic cancer after initial research showed that combining two drugs can destroy cells which act in conjunction with tumours. The Cancer Research UK-funded trial involving mice found that combining gemcitabine – a chemotherapy medication – and experimental drug MRK003 multiplied the effect of each, ultimately killing cells. The team behind the research did, however, stress that it will be some time before they’re able to say how successful this approach will be in patients. Researchers from the Cambridge Research Institute said the ability of gemcitabine – widely used by pancreatic cancer patients – to destroy tumours was increased when MRK003 was added. A clinical trial into the findings is now under way. Study author Professor David Tuveson said: ‘We’ve discovered why these two drugs together set off a domino effect of molecular activity to switch off cell survival processes and destroy pancreatic cancer cells.’ The findings were published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine. Duncan Jodrell, professor of cancer therapeutics at the University of Cambridge, is leading the clinical trial. He said: ‘We’re delighted that the results of this important research are now being evaluated in a clinical trial, to test whether this might [...]

If you are aged over 100, University College London (UCL) want to hear from you! By taking part in a study, you could help UCL’s researchers unlock the mysteries behind successful ageing. The ageing of Britain’s population is becoming an increasingly important issue. Some people age happily, and very successfully leading active lives over 100 years; but others do not, and suffer from age-related illnesses and only live into their 60s or 70s. UCL Institute of Neurology is interested in identifying people who have aged successfully and lived to over 100 years of age. They want to understand why these people have not suffered from significant age-related illnesses. By investigating the past history, diet, height, weight, family history and genetic make-up of centenarians, UCL’s research team are looking to answer three important questions: Why people over 100 years of age have not suffered significant age-related illness? What genes and environmental factors lead to greater life-span? Why these people aged over 100 years old don’t suffer from age-related disorders such as Alzheimer’s, ataxia, stroke, Parkinson’s disease and neuromuscular conditions, or develop health problems much later in life? What taking part involves Taking part in the study is easy. Centenarians who agree to get involved will need to fill out a quick, simple questionnaire, and give a small saliva or blood [...]

Contrary to popular belief older drivers are safer on the roads than their more youthful counterparts, figures have suggested. Disproving the tired stereotype that older drivers can be a liability, figures obtained by the IAM from the DVLA reveal the rate of deaths and serious injuries in crashes among drivers over 80 is three times less than the rate for those aged 17-19. However, drivers over the age of 80 are still generally more likely to suffer serious injuries in a car crash. The figures come along with news that the number of drivers over the age of 80 has now topped one million. Following a freedom of information request by the motoring organisation, DVLA figures show that there are now 1,012,399 drivers aged over 80. There are also 122 licence holders over the age of 100, including three 105-year-olds, and one 106-year-old woman. IAM chief executive Simon Best said: ‘Older people need their cars which give them better mobility and access to more activities and services. Those who wish to continue driving beyond the age of 70 should only be prevented from doing so if there are compelling reasons. ‘Rather than seeking to prevent older people from driving, we [...]

Police in Purbeck, together with road safety partners, carried out a road safety operation as part of an ongoing effort to reduce the number of road casualties in Dorset. Wareham officers worked together with the ‘no excuse’ team and Dorset Road Safe on Monday, 20 February 2012 – in a bid to raise the profile of road safety in the area and help make Purbeck roads even safer. The operation took place across the Purbeck neighbourhood area and saw officers targeting motorists who were putting themselves and others at risk by drink driving, not wearing a seatbelt, using a mobile phone while driving or exceeding the speed limit. During the operation a number of offences were identified. In total 53 Fixed Penalty Notices were issued, and the safety camera vans detected 38 speed offences. This included five drivers stopped for driving while using their mobile phones; three driving with no MOT and 26 motorists caught driving without a seatbelt. A further 16 drivers were issued with Fixed Penalty Notices for exceeding the speed limit, and three were stopped for driving without a clear view of the road. Special Constable Chris Brolan, of the Dorset Police Traffic Unit, said; “This [...]

The wind farm would be located 8.2 miles (13.2km) off Peveril Point Residents in Hampshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight are being given the chance to see plans for a major offshore wind farm. The company behind the 76 sq-mile (200-sq-km) project is holding public exhibitions over the next 18 months. The Infrastructure Planning Commission, a body which rules on major national projects, will then consider approval. If agreed, the wind farm will generate power for between 615,000 to 820,000 homes a year. Potential impact Last November, the public in Dorset were shown plans for the onshore parts of the project, including locations for the substation. The consultation will now focus on the offshore aspects of project, which is called Navitus Bay. The developers, Eneco, says it wants feedback on important viewpoints from the coastline and the impact to fishing, diving, recreational activity and commercial shipping. The original proposals unveiled in March 2011 were for up to 240 wind turbines. It showed a wind farm located 8.2 miles (13.2km) off Peveril Point at Swanage and 8.4 miles (13.5km) south west of The Needles. The project is one of nine UK [...]

The London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) have taken temporary ownership of the Weymouth and Portland Sailing Village for the summer as it gets ready to house the competitors and team officials taking part in the Olympic and Paralympic Games Sailing events. The Osprey Quay development which will contain 84 residential units will host 700 athletes and 550 officials during the Olympic Games. Approximately half that number will use the accommodation during the Paralympic Games. In the official ceremony where LOCOG took temporary ownership of the Village today, Sir Keith Mills, Deputy Chair of LOCOG and Councillor Graham Winter, Mayor of Weymouth and Portland joined site workers and local residents at the Village to thank them for their work and to showcase how a finished apartment will look during the Games. During the Games each house will host around eight athletes and have all facilities except a kitchen. Athletes will eat in a temporary dining hall which will be constructed on the site and have a social area in the new Chesil Cove Foundation School which LOCOG will take temporary ownership of in May.
Police are encouraging the public to be on their guard against credit card scams, after two recent offences targeted older members of the community in Bournemouth. The two offences, which both took place over the past month, start with the victims receiving a telephone call from someone claiming to be from their bank. In both cases, the caller stated that the victim’s debit or credit card was about to expire and that a new one would be sent to them via a courier. The caller then asked for the victim’s pin number. Both of the victims gave their pin numbers to the caller. The next day, someone claiming to be the courier attended the victim’s home address and exchanged the old card for a new one. The victims have then had money taken out of their accounts. Debbie Oldfield, Dorset Police Crime Prevention Advisor, said: “These are callous crimes which appear to have deliberately targeted older members of the community. “It is so important that people do not hand over their pin numbers or bank cards to anyone, no matter how genuine they appear to be. “Your bank will not ask for your pin number or [...]
