At approximately 9.55pm on the 8th February DFRS was alerted to a
property fire in Sea View Road, Upper Parkstone. Two crews from Poole
attended this incident. When they arrived they found that a small fire in
the dining room of a flat had been extinguished. An elderly gentleman who
was in the property at the time of the fire was treated at the scene by
fire and ambulance personnel for smoke inhalation. He was later taken to
hospital.
District Commander for Poole and Hamworthy, Group Manager Phil Allen said:
“This fire is believed to have been caused by unattended smoking materials.
As a fire service, we can’t say ‘don’t smoke’ but we can say ‘if you’re
going to smoke, please, please ensure that everything is extinguished into
a suitable container before you go to bed or feel sleepy’. In this case,
the occupier has had a really lucky escape – similar incidents I have
attended have led to tragic consequences. The smoke and fire damage even
small fires cause to your home and possessions is not worth it, when this
can be easily prevented with just a few seconds worth of preventative
action.”
